Diabetic Diet And Care

People with diabetes must follow a strict diet plan. The diet known as diabetic diet will help to control intake of calories, carbohydrates, and fat so that blood sugar in the body can be maintain in a normal level. For those who also have problems with blood pressure, salt intake will also need to be controlled. If the kidneys have been affected by diabetes the amount of protein eaten will also be monitored. While the diet is very restrictive it has saved many lives, and there are a lot of special foods for diabetics now so that they can enjoy more of the things they enjoy safely.

Following are some basic guidelines for diabetes care:

  • All medicines must be taken on time and discussed in detail with the patient's doctor.

  • A diabetic should make frequent doctor's visits and also have regular appointments with the podiatrist and dentist. This is because Diabetes can negatively affect one's feet and gums.

  • Because of the danger of going blind diabetics should have their eyes examined at regular basis.

  • A diabetic should have heir feet examined daily, because diabetics may not be able to feel any pain because of nerve damage. A wound left untreated may turn malignant. This could lead to amputation.

  • Smoking is strictly forbidden.

  • Blood sugar must be checked often to know how effective the medicines and diets have been.

  • Physical exercise is also good for diabetics, but as always it is important to consult one's doctor before beginning an exercise program.

  • Have a first aid kit at hand at your home and while you travel.

  • A diabetic should avoid stress because it can cause blood pressure to rise and insulin to drop.

While it may be difficult to live with diabetes, a normal life is possible. If a patient adheres to their doctor's orders they can have a nice long life. Diabetes does not have to be a death sentence.
